Santa Monica Treesavers

The city of Santa Monica plans to remove over 50 of the beautiful trees along 2nd and 4th street. The reason is city insists that some of them are too damaged to be saved and the main purpose of the decision is to make these streets more attractive to the shopping public.

I believe that the streets are not attractive enough not because of shade of the trees, but because of their lack of business efforts in comparison to 3rd street, one of the premier shopping destinations in West Los Angeles.

These dense and large-canopy ficus trees are their important resources. I really wander after the city loses the trees, what else they will have in order to attract shoppers.

This weird logic is not only found in the city of Santa Monica but also everywhere. This kind of decision is usually not represented by the people of the community but by bureaucratic interest.
